‘Who are in the men in tree?’ I was asked this question by two of my friends at the end of a busy exhibition opening night at Carlow Library. I was puzzled. They brought me over to the painting to which they were referring, it was ‘Treedom Series 3'!
The beech tree that anchors the site of my home-place, now had pride of place as part of my art collection ‘The Sacred Lives of Trees’.
I stood back and took a look. This particular piece had been cast in a very spontaneous moment of splashing and merging of paint. I had studied this tree many times, watched the sun-light traversing its branches as autumn spun into winter. Treedom 1 and 2 had been more meticulous in my measurement of colours. ‘Treedom 3’ came like an avalanche to the canvas.

My friends had been quietly observing the piece from across the room during my opening event. They had counted many faces and bodies of men peering from the branches of the tree. As I took a closer look they began to emerge. In truth, I had not noticed them before.
