The Leap of Faith

16th October 2016

Weighing Up the Odds

It took a leap of faith to create & launch The Sacred Lives of Trees, my most ambitious creative endeavour at that point in 2016. I had planned to create a collection of 20 paintings within a specific time frame and I was on track in my production. However, as I got nearer to the completion of my goal I could no longer ignore the fact that I would have to do something quite extra-ordinary to create awareness for my exhibition launch.

I had started out as a teacher of maths and science. Developing my creative abilities and having the confidence to exhibit my work took years of healing, study and transformation. Expecting the Universe to supply the right amount of people to support my project seemed like a big ask, especially as I was unknown in the art world. Yet, I’d had some success in the previous two years with opportunities that presented and which I grasped without hesitation.

Crowd Funding PR

I had a light bulb moment. I could use crowd-funding as a way to enlist some financial buy-in but more importantly it could serve to create wider awareness of my exhibition and paintings. I did some research and decided to use the Fund it platform.

I set up the campaign to offer rewards that served as a pre-purchase of my art, with options for pledging small or larger amounts of funds. This would give me some reassurance and confidence that I had some back-up support for the months of work and personal finance that had gone into making this dream a reality.

Sleepless Nights

The three weeks of my Fund-it campaign were nerve-wrecking, exciting and amazing. I had to reach the fund target by a certain date, if I didn’t reach the target I would get none of the pledged funds. That was the deal. Even though creating awareness was my main reason for using Fund it, it was still important to reach the fund target by the end date.

Local radio stations, KCLR 96 FM and Arty Facts KFM, invited me on air to announce my campaign. This helped me to generate some excitement on social media too. All eyes were on me now. There were sleepless nights and I had gigantic butterflies riding rollercoasters in my tummy most days.

The Alchemist Appeared

I had tremendous support throughout the campaign from sources I had not anticipated or even known previously. During a busy twitter networking hour, Digital Alchemist Trevor Lorkings, created a stir when he pledged design and supply of 500 promotional cards for my exhibition. These arrived within the week all the way from the UK.

I didn’t know Trevor prior to this. My message about trees and the authentic path had resonated with his own life journey and prompted him to support my campaign. I asked if I could share some of his story on my blog as a thank you and he agreed.

The Lady who swam with Turtles Arrived

As a result of my article about Trevor, I secured another amazing sponsor. Brenda Bergin, Seniorpreneurs Global, contacted me to offer promotional sponsorship for my exhibition. In exchange she asked me to write an article about her cancer journey and how her dream of swimming with turtles helped her to pull through it all. We had great fun weaving stories and networks together. Brenda put all her energy and enthusiasm into shouting out my show.

Trending amongst Inspiring Women

The momentum was building at every stage leading to the next level of support. Local author and marketing professional Lorna Sixsmith, The Irish Farmerette, got in touch to provide tips on how to improve my marketing message.

The very generous Teresa Mc Grath, Hypnotherapy Terenure, offered to make and supply the food for my launch night.

The Women’s Inspire Network, a popular twitter group, invited me to be their Star Biz on the last week of my campaign. Thanks to their support #ArtofCaroline trended at number 7 that night. I had supportive messages from all over the country including two celebrity Dragons.

A Successful Mission full of Suspense

On the eve of my Fund it target date, I was restless. With one hour to the deadline I needed €50 to reach the target. Just in time I received a notification to say that an anonymous donor had made the final contribution for that exact amount. It was such a relief, followed on by a huge sense of gratitude and achievement.

In total there were 25 funders who made my Fund it campaign a success by contributing to the financial target I had set. Their funds ensured that I had some buy-in for my artwork, while the campaign itself had put my tree paintings and myself in a much bigger spotlight than ever before. It had been a daring but successful campaign, thrilling at times and definitely worth the effort and determination to make it work.

"I’m grateful to all my funders, sponsors and people who got involved to make it work."

Loves Light Upon Us

The Sacred Lives of Trees

I created The Sacred Lives of Trees art collection to honour trees for the contribution they have made to my wellbeing and healing and to encourage more people to express the benefits they have received from trees.

Many of my tree paintings now reside in homes around and outside of Ireland. There are still some original paintings to choose from and I have a selection of open and limited edition prints in the collection. My tree art is a wonderful way to enliven your home or work space with colour and inspiration for healing.

Check out the full range in my online gallery. If you have any query’s about your selection I’m here to help.

Caroline Cunningham

Through my art and writing I share stories and inspiration for transformation, healing and dreams turning to reality. When you visit my gallery you glimpse my journey, my authentic path. It took a ‘Break True’ moment to point me towards developing my artistic talents. It’s never too late to make a new start. I’ve achieved a lot in a relatively short time. My work has been presented in New York as part of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, has been displayed on county Post Office and has been show-cased on National TV.
