December, is a time of year that gives some people cause for despair as we plunge into deeper into darkness and the cold damp air, a hallmark of Irish winter weather. I love the outdoors, leaving my window open and the feel of warm sunshine on my skin in summer months. Regardless of what the experts say, no amount of vitamin D can replace that feeling.
As we glide through the sublime colours of autumn, I acknowledge the in-between state of leaving any semblance of summer and preparing to embrace the winter as best I can.
I've developed strategies for keeping my mental health in check throughout winter. Many of my 'Sacred Lives of Trees' paintings show the bareness of winter branches attempting to catch hold of the setting sun, reflecting a search for beauty and hope.
"That which, diverts our minds from perceived problems and dilemmas, is worthy of being appreciated and framed."
Caroline Cunningham, Artist
The In Between’ painting places the viewer between darkness and the light. In such moments, our true essence can be impressed even more upon us. Embracing our darkness is just as important as recognising the brilliance of our light.
