Top 3 tips for resilience in pandemic - KCLR Podcast
Many business owners I know, agree that running your own business is challenging, rewarding and character-building. Running your own business in a pandemic that seems un-ending is quite a different matter.
Regardless of the type of business you own, your bottom line now heavily depends on your ability to function with a clear and focussed mind, two things that are greatly threatened by constant and rapidly changing circumstances due to COVID-19 preventative measures.
The pandemic has brought added pressures and stresses of protecting customers and employees, finding new ways to pivot business to on-line services, learning new systems and technology while trying to retain customer loyalty and brand identity with shop doors closed.
Without proper stress-management strategies in place many people are likely to experience burn-out due to pro-longed periods of poor sleep, fatigue, brain fog and feeling agitated and irritable. Weight-gain is another side-effect of un-managed stress and this does not always work favourbly for our self-image.
"Never before has it been so apparent that our health is our wealth. You simple cannot keep running on an empty tank. So, how do you avoid burn out in a pandemic that seems un-ending?"
I spoke to John Purcell on KCLR98FM business show The Bottom Line to give my six-minutes worth of my three top tips for building resilience to stay focused in order to successfully reach your business goals.
That was the night our Taoiseach (P.M.) announced that Ireland was going into full lockdown. In the face of a death wreaking virus, we were instructed, starting from midnight, to restrict travel to within a 2km radius for exercise and grocery shopping.
Our lives changed dramatically in that moment. I packed my bags that night and moved in with my partner and his children, for how long we didn't know. Little was known at that stage about this new coronavirus.
The Silence
Overnight, an unusual silence descended on our towns, villages and cities. Photographer Rob O'Connor took to the streets of Cork to capture those moments through his lens. His work sparked an idea for colloborattive project called The Silence.
I am one of the 45 artists invited by Art In Many Forms curator Pat O'Carroll to contribute my reflections on those unusual events. Together with the photography of Rob O'Connor, our art workand poems would tell a story of our collective experience.
"I hope the entire project will be brought to life in 2021, with actors reading the words which have been contributed to a backdrop of images by Rob O'Connor who has inspired The Silence."
Pat O' Carroll
My contribution to The Silence is a poem: 'Stay In' - which you can read below.
In Memory & Gratitude
Coming together as a nation with a common goal of keeping each other safe required a lot of effort and sacrifice. I'd like to offer sympathies to those who lost loved ones during that time, it was the most difficult experience of all I imagine.
Also, my thanks to those who worked tirelessly, and not without worry, on the front lines throughout the pandemic.
How I Changed my Life through Authentic Path Personalised Wellness Programme
In challenging times, people are at more risk of sliding into danger zones that result in brain fog, crippling anxiety, depression, lost sense of purpose and even burn out.
This is one woman’s story of how she succeeded despite many obstacles. The COVID-19 lockdown had forced her into solitary isolation in the countryside a few months after her husband and best friend died. She had put her career on hold to take care of him throughout his debilitating illness which he bravely endured. Sarah Jane found it difficult to get back on track after so much sudden change which felt more like a nightmare.
Contact Caroline for Personalised Wellbeing Coaching
Coaching had always been part of my therapy service, ensuring added value for my clients. In-person therapy work was not possible during lockdowns so I proposed a six week (online) wellness coaching programme to Sarah-Jane and she agreed to give it a go. Through my coaching skills I empower clients in creating effective self-care strategies to make a difference in their lives. This is an account of how we worked together to make this happen and Sarah Jane has kindly allowed me to share her experience after completing the personalised programme.
"Coaching has always been part of my therapy service, ensuring added value for my clients."
Our first session was by WhatsApp video call, with me sitting in my car to get some privacy and space. By our next session we were both using Zoom and I had found some headphones. At first it was hard for Sarah Jane to see any signs of progress despite her best intentions and efforts. Luckily for her, I had the benefit of seeing the bigger picture and was able to guide her towards feeling that she could tackle anything, including anxiety, brain fog and grief.
After six sessions, weekly progress reports and two months later, we were still in lockdown but circumstances had improved considerably. Sarah Jane had reclaimed her mental focus, lots of calm and a zest for life.
"I had the benefit of seeing the bigger picture and was able to guide her towards feeling that she could tackle anything, including anxiety, brain fog and grief."
Authentic Path Coach & Wellbeing Sherpa
The corner-stone of our work together was that Sarah Jane learned how to curb her anxiety, with the added assistance of my book ‘Seven C’s to Calm – Reclaiming your Anxiety-free Self’. I offered gentle encouragement & suggestions and within a few weeks Sarah Jane had devised a self-care routine suited completely to her own needs and she even found a way to manage her time effectively.
She achieved many of her goals, such as participating in on-line courses for both business skills and personal interest. She engaged in on-line networking events and sought support from her local enterprise office for developing her business. She took up gardening and experimented with cooking.
"When Sarah Jane chatted with her friends through video-call, they noticed a significant change in her mood and appearance. Sarah Jane was feeling a lot more in charge of her life, all this within two months and still living through lockdown."
Authentic Path Coach & Wellbeing Sherpa
I was thrilled for her success and it was exciting to discover that I could use video call technology to help clients to turn their lives around, through focusing on their selfcare.
Find out what Sarah Jane has to say about Authentic Path Wellness Coaching
Interview:
Coach Caroline: How beneficial has the personalised coaching programme been for you?
Sarah Jane:Extremely beneficial. I was really struggling and stuck in a rut. I had no idea how to get myself out of it. The coaching sessions came at just the right time for me, when I needed it the most.
Coach Caroline: What have been the most significant benefits for you of taking part in these sessions?
Sarah Jane:I'd say having the opportuntiy to 'talk-it-out' and having someone to listen to me, who can 'get' what is going on with me and helping me to put in place a step by step self-care routine. Also, I am more aware of the signs of anxiety and stress and am able to do things that reduce their effects. these would be the biggest benefits.
Coach Caroline: How has your life improved as a result of taking part in our coaching sessions:
Sarah Jane:I now have much better quality of life, having introduced regular yoga and mediation and other self-care routines and I feel so much better for it. My anxiety and stress levels are radically reduced. I also have steps I can follow if at any time I feel anxious.
Coach Caroline: In your opinion, who can benefit the most from Authentic Path Sessions?
Sarah Jane:Anyone and everyone. My circumstance was that I was suffering from anxiety and stress following my husband’s death. I was going through a complete life transition and needed help to see a way forward. I think these sessions are perfect for someone who is looking for a change of job or career or starting a new business or for someone who is caring for a loved one during their illness. These are times when we need to take care of ourselves most and probably need some extra support.
Coach Caroline: In our weekly sessions we touched on areas such as empowerment, restoration of calm, professional identity and life purpose, positive mindset, acknowledgement of achievements and we discussed the process of grief. Is there anything else you would add to this list of what was addressed in our sessions?
Sarah Jane:Building confidence and self-esteem
Coach Caroline: What rating would you give for the level of support you received in each of these areas we addressed in our Authentic Path Wellness sessions (Rating of 1 to 5 with 5 being the highest level of support).
Sarah Jane:Definitely a 5
Coach Caroline: Did you feel weekly sessions were the right level of spacing for checking in with you and to allow for progress to take place?
Sarah Jane:For me a block of 6 weekly sessions was about right. The time allotted to the session allowed me to talk about how I felt, recall what I did or didn’t do and to learn a new technique and during the week I was able to practice the new techniques and make some changes to my routine. Since completing the six week programme a few months ago I have continued to use all the tools I learnt on the course.
Coach Caroline: How would you rate the following aspects of my coaching skills based on our sessions and rating of one to five, five being the score that indicates the best impression made:
Listening Skills - Did you feel heard?
Empathy Level - Did you feel understood?
Matching your needs with useful strategies.
Helping you to identify meaningful goals.
Setting appropriate actions (homework)
Sarah Jane: 5 for all areas
Coach Caroline: What matters most to you when choosing me as a wellness coach, would it be my experience as a holistic therapist, or my authentic path story of ‘walking the talk’, my extensive qualifications or the fact I’m author with creative achievements who’s been in the media? Why would choose me above others offering a similar service?
Sarah Jane:Having read your book ‘Seven C’s to Calm’ I knew, that you would know a lot about what I had being going through. Your website also highlights your authenticity and qualifications and shows your professionalism and enthusiasm for helping others with their wellness.
Coach Caroline: Do you feel the title Authentic Path Session is appropriate for the service provided?
Sarah Jane:I like the title, it sounds unique and creative and is reflective of being true to yourself on your own path.
Coach Caroline: At the heart of our sessions we dealt with anxiety and how to move beyond this limiting condition. Do you feel there is a still a stigma around discussing our mental health?
Sarah Jane:I noticed that whenever I chatted to people about anxiety before the lockdown, I was met with silence. I felt I was the only one and that it wasn’t a “real” condition. Since COVID-19 pandemic where life has changed so drastically, I’ve discovered that all my friends have suffered from it and we are now able to openly talk about it, in other words it has become more acceptable to talk about it.
Coach Caroline: Is there anything else you would like to add about our work together?
Sarah Jane:Fabulous course Caroline, really valued the time you spent with me and I enjoyed the sessions very much
This feedback has been kindly given by Sarah Jane whose name has been changed to respect her request to maintain her privacy.

Each for equal, confident, empowered & authentic humans
Here I am striking the 'each for equal' pose to highlight the message of International Women's Day 2020 , The #eachforequal campaign asks us to keep this message alive throughout the year to make a strong collective statement to accelerate change for gender equality.
First celebrated in 1911, International Women's Day is now celebrated globally bringing focus to the achievements of women throughout history and in modern times, acknowledging their struggle to bring about greater gender equality.
As individuals we can influence change through our collective actions, conversations, behaviors and mindsets. A gender equal world can be healthier, wealthier and more harmonious.
"What can you do to make a positive difference for women everywhere?"
For my part, I am being the change I want to see in the world. I am committed to being a better version of myself, being healthier, more empowered, authentic and fabulous and I can help you to achieve this for yourself too.
My journey towards greater wellbeing and empowerment began after burn-out from stress of every kind in 1999. By burn-out I mean, the moment when I fell apart, the pressure valve blowing, unrestrained sadness taking over, no longer being able to make it look like 'everything-is-grand' on the outside. I look back at that moment with humility and gratitude that I was forced to face my brokenness, my fears, my negative-thinking self. In the years that followed, I learned better self-care strategies, developed a positive mindset and a passion for living. I have faced my fears and achieved things I could never imagined back in 1999.
I am grateful to the men and women who provided guidance and support along my path to authenticity. I believe each person has potential to be a better version of themselves and my purpose is to help people who are serious about making that happen. It starts by looking within. Are you ready to take the test?
Are you happy with being you?
Take a moment to check-in. Close your eyes or look into a mirror. Are you happy with being you? What parts need healing and love? Do you sense a more powerful side of you that needs encouragement to come to the surface? Does that scare you? Are you curious to know your true self? Would you like some inspiration to set your true self free?
When I undertook this exercise after burn-out in 1999, I already knew I needed to change. At first I found this exercise difficult, nothing came but once I got past my impatience and allowed calm to prevail I started to get inklings of a part of myself that was seeking to be acknowledged. I stayed with those thoughts and eventually I sensed the power of being a woman, one who is strong and not afraid of what others think of her, one who is daring, confident and free.
"I quickly got my paints and brushes and created my impression of that powerful woman before she could become a distant memory. I called her Break True."
Caroline Cunningham Authentic Path Inspiration
Today, Break True is instantly recognised by people who have triumphed over adversity, people who have dared to step into their power. I have seen people stop in their tracks as they approached this art piece during my art exhibitions and one person even cried. Break True has become a symbol for transformation and empowerment and encourages you keep going on your authentic path. The journey never stops because our potential for improvement is limitless.
'Break True' is a limited editon giclee art print, presented on archival hannemulhe paper, complete with certificate of authenticity, signed by the artist and ready for worldwide delivery.
Novel Coronavirus - Resources for preventing spread of this highly infectious disease
This article was first published Feb 24th 2020 in response to lack of meaningful instruction to the public from the Irish Health Service with regards to preventing the spread of novel Coronavirus. As cases of the virus started to rise in mainland Europe and people were returning to Ireland from Italy, the H.S.E. finally issued more detailed instructions to the public with regards to COVID-19 testing, quarantine and travel.
In February 2020, with the threat of a new form of Coronavirus (COVID-19) and it’s capacity to rapidly spread across continents, causing serious harm, I was struck by the relative absence of this topic from conversations in my social networks.
"Were people being superstitious, wise or complacent?"
In Ireland, we’ve been relatively lucky in the past with regards to outbreaks of new viruses so it would have been easy to adopt a complacent attitude towards the announcement of deadly flu virus. Looking at the Irish Annual Notifiable Disease record it's clear that even the number of case's of general influenza is on the rise each year, with a threefold number of case's recorded in 2018.
COVID-19 Novel Coronavirus
In my work as a well-being coach my philosophy is this:
The best way to prevent or reduce risk of illness from any kind of flu virus is to be informed, be prepared and to act mindfully.
Bear in mind that COVID-19 is a new virus, scientists are still working to understand how it is being transferred. There were some anecdotal cases of asymptomatic transfer of the disease but as of 24th February there was not enough evidence to support this method of transfer. The Health Protection Surveillance centre have since stated that people can transfer the virus when symptomatic and asymptomatic.
The information provided in this article has been collated from trusted government sources, media and scientific research so that you may make the best decisions to safeguard your health and that of your community.
Within 18 days of publishing this article the Irish Government announced the closure of schools and colleges and shortly afterwards our country went into lockdown to protect the health of our communities. This was the scenario worldwide and thankfully, months later we are much better informed about COVID-19 prevention measures. It has been a challenging time for us all, many lives lost, many businesses and jobs affected and many who have been shaken by the illness and the changes to our society. But we can learn from this and we can recover and become more resilient with knowledge and resolve.
BE INFORMED
What is Coronavirus / COVID-19?
COVID-19 (also known as novel
coronavirus) is a respiratory illness that has not been previously seen in
humans. Coronaviruses originate in animals and can be transferred to humans.
Covid-19 was first reported to the World Health Organisation from Wuhan, China,
on 31 December 2019. The virus quickly spread to other Chinese provinces and
other countries, including Japan, Thailand, parts of Europe and the United States.
On January 30th 2020 the
World Health Organisation (W.H.O) announced that the COVID-19 is a Public
Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).
"The W.H.O. is working closely with global experts, governments and partners to rapidly expand scientific knowledge, to track the spread and virulence of this new virus, and to provide advice to countries and individuals on measures to protect health and prevent further spread and outbreak."
There is still much to be
understood about the origins of COVID-19, it’s severity and how it is being
transferred between humans. Knowledge of the virus may change and that is why
it is important to keep up to date. WHO provides daily updates on COVID-19.
What are the symptoms of Covid-19 Coronavirus
Common symptoms of Covid-19
(Coronavirus) may include:
Coughing
Shortness
of breath
Breathing
difficulties
Fever
A
high temperature (38 degrees Celsius or higher)
Symptoms of a more severe
infection may include:
Pneumonia
Severe
acute respiratory syndrome
Kidney
failure
Death
How is Covid-19 (Coronavirus) transmitted?
Covid-19 (Coronavirus) is spread in
the same way as other cold and flu viruses i.e. through infected droplets of an
infected person who you have come in contact with. The infected droplets can be
spread through sneezing, coughing and speaking. You could also get infected if
you touch surfaces that have droplets of the virus on them and afterwards touch
your nose, mouth and eyes.
Currently the CDC (Centres for Disease Control) says that COVID-19 is transmitted between humans, by people who have symptoms of the illness. Much still has to be learned about the incubation period and whether the illness can be transferred by infected people who show no symptoms. Until more is known about the transfer of the disease it is wise to be vigilant and take extra precautions to prevent the spread of infection.
BE PREAPRED
Every home should have a well-stocked health and safety cabinet. Considering the rate at which COVID-19 Coronavirus is spreading across continents it’s a good idea to be prepared ahead of any outbreak in your area. Consider adding good quality protective face masks to your health and safety cabinet for use in situations where extra protection may be necessary.
I have no affiliation with these products they are only suggestions to get
you started on your search.
Protection for Mouth, Nose and Eyes
Get yourself a supply of face mask which cover your nose and mouth. Paper varieties are not as effective due to the fact that they absorb moisture, whereas FFP3 grade face-masks are more robust and have a respiratory valve which makes breathing more comfortable.
The H.S.E. originally stated that face masks (type unspecified) are only useful for preventing infected people from spreading the virus, however there are actually a number of H.S.E. reports with regards to the prevention of other respiratory infections such as tuberculosis in which the wearing of FFP3 standard masks have been recommended to be worn by carers/health-workers treating infected people.
Masks are only effective if the wearer has been trained in their correct use, for example, handling the surface of the mask without proper hand hygiene, could give rise to infection if the outside of the mask had become contaminated. Furthermore a person with known symptoms of COVID-19 should be following the advice of their doctor and be isolating from others for 14 days. The wearing of facemasks is more useful for preventing transfer of the disease by people who are asymptomatic.
Ireland was in flu season (October to March) when COVID-19 arrived on our shores and many people would have had symptoms similar to Coronavirus. Unless people knew they had come in contact with a person infected with Coronavirus they may not have contacted their G.P. See Ireland's H.S.E. advice on when to get tested for COVID-19.
Consider also protection for your eyes and choose eye goggles that provide good cover and visibility.
Anti-Microbial Hand Gel
Alcohol-based anti-microbial hand gels are suited to on-the-go use. The most effective versions have alcohol content between 70-95%. Take care with these solutions as they are flammable. Also they may cause harm if accidently ingested so keep out of reach of children and avoid contact with the eyes also.
Alcohol- based anti-microbial hand gels are available in most supermarkets, pharmacies and health stores.
Tissues
Make sure you have a good supply of tissues for everyday use. If you feel the need to cough or sneeze cover your mouth and nose with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the bin and immediately wash your hands or use sanitizing gel. Alternatively, sneeze into your elbow, remembering that you need to be mindful of surfaces (including your clothing) that you have potential to contaminate if you are infected but not showing symptoms.
ACT MINDFULLY
How to protect yourself from Covid-19 Coronavirus
Prior to first publication of this article, the guidelines to the Irish public for reducing the spread Coronavirus were much the same as the guidelines for prevention of common cold and flu infections, with the addition of some precaustions regarding travel. Since then the H.S.E. have provided additonal advice on reporting Coronavirus, quarantine and travel.
Stepping up your hygiene practice
will help to reduce risk of contracting and spreading these viruses now and in
the longer-term.
Wash your hands frequently using soap and water and use anti-microbial hand gel for on-the-go use. Follow the World Health Guidelines for safe washing of hands.
Disinfect devices you regularly handle such as mobile phones and keyboards and clean your hands after touching door handles and other common-use surfaces. Wash or disinfect hands after handling money and use cashless payment options where possible.
If you cough or sneeze cover your mouth and nose with tissue, throw the tissue in a bin and immediately wash your hands. If you are without a tissue, cough or sneeze into your flexed elbow and change your clothing as soon as you return home, putting used clothing in the laundry.
Avoid close contact with anyone who is has symptoms of coughing, sneezing or fever.
If you have flu symptoms such as fever, cough and difficulty breathing, phone your GP (do not visit the GP surgery) and follow their instructions.

Check List for Preventing Cold & Flu Infections & Avoiding Epidemics
I get less colds and flu's than I did in the past, not because of luck of the draw but because of the committment I made to self-care and mindful living. I share valuable insights here so you can achieve greater wellbeing and have more time to enjoy your life.
Article contains an afiliate link for a nutrition tracking app which offers free and paid options.
Cold and flu have been causing trouble for humans for about 200 years according to a study of virology.
Flu season is typically between October and March each year with February being the peak month for infections. Occasionally the risk to health is made more menacing by the outbreak of epidemics and pandemics with deadly consequences, such as corona virus COVID-19.
It’s no fun having cold or flu, especially, when they often affect people during their precious time off, depriving them of time they hoped to spend with friends and family. This was a common occurrence during my teaching career prior to becoming a wellness coach. Time off, became an endurance of sore throat, runny nose, sneezing and coughing, aches and fatigue, the symptoms common to cold and flu infections.
"The truth is we all have the potential to have a greater positive influence on our health and wellbeing. I help you to access that potential through my online courses and therapy & coaching practice."
I left my teaching career in 1999, after burn-out from stress of every kind and from there-on I began to examine every aspect of my health and wellbeing.
The discoveries I made resulted in my transformation to becoming happier, healthier, fitter and more empowered. Along with developing a positive attitude, I became pain-free and I don’t get as many colds and flu’s as I used to in my teaching days.
"Are you ready to prevent cold & flu from stealing your precious time and energy?"
Be Informed about your opponent
Being informed about your opponent is a good strategy in sport so let’s put these viruses under the spot-light to see how we can out-manoeuvre them. First we take a look at the viruses themselves, how they take hold and what to do if you get infected and then we look at the ways to prevent infection.
What are cold and flu?
Cold and flu are both respiratory illnesses caused by different types of viruses. They are spread by infected droplets that enter the body and develop there to cause sneezing, coughing, fatigue and aches and pains. Flu symptoms are usually more severe than cold symptoms, the onset can be quicker and accompanied by fever. Flu can lead to additional conditions of ear and sinus infections and even bacterial infections such as pneumonia.
Doctors can determine if you have a
cold or flu and will usually recommend rest, keeping hydrated and use of
over-the-counter remedies for easing symptoms. In some cases an anti-viral
remedy may be prescribed.
How are cold and flu viruses transmitted?
Cold and flu viruses are transferred via the infected droplets of a person nearby who is sneezing or coughing or talking. The viruses (from droplets) can also live on inanimate objects for two to eight hours.
Example: If someone with the virus transfers the infected droplets to their hands (by sneezing or coughing) and they proceed to touch a door handle or keyboard which you use shortly afterwards, the virus can then enter your body if you touch your mouth, eyes or nose.
How are cold and flu treated?
Many cases of cold or flu are mild
and you can treat yourself at home without prescription medication with
recovery generally within one week. It’s important to avoid contact with other
people when you first notice symptoms.
Drink plenty of fluids, including water, soup and other hot drinks.
Rest and sleep are important for recovery as your body’s immune system is busy fighting the infection.
Aches, fever and coughs can be treated with over-the-counter medications if needed.
Cover your coughs and sneezes with tissues and immediately dispose of those tissues.
Wash your hands to prevent spreading the virus to other surfaces or to other people in your house.
If conditions worsen you should see
your doctor especially, if you are at high-risk for flu-related complications e.g.
people with weakened immune systems or pregnant women, young children, people
over 65 years old and people with chronic illness.
In Ireland, flu vaccines are available from your local G.P. .Full details of who should get the flu vaccine and when to get it are available via the HSE website.
Extra note: In the case of flu viruses that are on the list of Notifiable Diseases you need to follow the advice of your governments health service.
COVID-19 is a highly infectious respiratory disease caused by a coronavirus resulting in global pandemic in 2020. It causes symptoms similar to cold and flu and for this reason you need to contact your doctor immediately to get advice regarding testing and self-isolation. People are requested to follow the instructions provided by their governments and health officials and keep informed about the presence of the virus globally and within their own country. https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019
Natural remedies for cold and flu:
Some people find natural flu remedies helpful. Medical research supports some treatments that include soup, honey, ginger and probiotics:
Warm chicken soup works on many levels as a flu remedy. The warm liquid can help ease a sore throat and provide hydration and electrolytes. Studies have shown it can also change the movement of white blood cells in your body. This decreases inflammation.
A lot of “natural” cough and cold medicines contain honey. Honey is an effective cough suppressant. Add some to your tea or eat a small spoonful if you’re trying to stop a coughing fit.
Drop a few slices of ginger into your tea or a glass of warm water, and sip. This root has healing properties that can ease a sore throat and suppress a cough. It can also help with nausea.
Probiotics increase the good bacteria in your gut while your body is fighting an infection. A healthy gut micro biome can boost your immune system, prevent new infections, and promote healing.
You might find this list of weird remedies from around the world an interesting read; it includes smelly socks, turnips and lizard soup. My favourite of these is the cocoa hot drink.
Checklist for preventing cold and flu infections and avoiding epidemics:
Many of these recommendations are common-sense and also backed by science, yet many people struggle to achieve the right balance in their daily lives. Keep this checklist close-by as a reminder to stay on track or enlist a wellbeing coach to help you when you are finding it harder to stay focused.
Avoid Malnutrition:
When I started using the Cronometer.com nutrient tracker. I initially focused on staying within my calorie allowance and this ensured I reached my goal weight but it also highlighted something else. According to my dietary intake I was malnourished. The Cronometer shows the nutrient content of food intake and I realised I needed to make some adjustments.
A balanced diet is not just about ensuring you get a bit of every type of nutrient; you need to get the right proportions too. Deficiencies in certain nutrients lead to weakened immune response, leaving you less able to fight off infections.
Nutrients that are most essential for preventing infections from cold and flu:
Fruit and vegetables are a good source of vitamins and minerals which are essential for a healthy immune system. Green vegetables are especially important. A study using mice showed that when healthy mice were deprived of green vegetables they lost 70 - 80% of cell-surface proteins which had an impact on their immunity. Deficiencies in Vitamin D, Vitamin C and Zinc can also weaken the immune system. Foods that are good sources of vitamin D include egg yolks, mushrooms, salmon, canned tuna, and beef liver while zinc occurs naturally in meat, fish and nuts. Vitamin C is abundant in fruit and vegetables such as oranges, blueberries, kale, peppers and broccoli.
Make sure to include plenty of fibre as a study from 2018 shows dietary fibre may also boost the immune system along with regulating digestion and lowering the risk of a number of health conditions.
The researchers compared the immune responses in mice that ate a low-fibre diet with those that ate a high-fibre diet. The results of the study suggest that the short-chain fatty acids present in dietary fibre enhanced the mice's immunity to influenza infections.
New research shows that drinking alcohol can damage the body’s dendrite cells, a vital component of the immune system. An increase in alcohol consumption over time can increase a person’s exposure to bacterial and viral infections. Be informed about what is consided to be an excess of alcohol consumption by visiting sites like Drink Aware.
Green tea on the other hand is a healthy alternative due to its high level of anti-oxidants called flavanoids. According to a study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, several fresh-brewed cups a day can lower blood pressure and lead to reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.
Keep moving:
Regular exercise not only improves fitness, it has benefits for improving
mood and boosting the immune system.
A study published in the Journal of Neurologic Clinicians, shows that regular movement keeps inflammation at bay by reducing stress-related hormones and improving the circulation of white-blood cells which help the body to fight the common cold and other diseases.
The World Health Organisation (W.H.O.) provides recommendations for the amount of physical activity people of different ages need to do on a weekly basis to maintain their health. For example, adults aged 18 to 64 years should do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity or at least 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity throughout the week. The World Health Organisation provides the full list of recommendations for people of all ages and abilities.
An easy way to track of your weekly move minutes is to install the free Google Fit app on your mobile phone. The app gives you an update on your weekly move minutes and heart points (which measure the intensity of your effort).
Quality Sleep is Vital:
Getting adequate sleep is extremely important if you’ve been exposed to a virus. According to a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, healthy adult participants who slept a minimum of eight hours each night over a two-week period, showed a greater resistance to a virus. Those who slept seven hours or less each night were about three percent more likely to develop the virus after exposure. One reason may be that the body releases cytokines during extended periods of sleep. Cytokines are a type of protein that helps the body fight infection by regulating the immune system.
Apart from getting enough hours of sleep your body also needs a good level of deep sleep for restoration of body functions. To monitor the quality of your sleep and fitness levels, I recommend Xiaomi Mi Band. The latest versions are available on Amazon, they are inexpensive and there are a variety of styles and colours of straps to choose from. The band syncs with the MiFit app which you can download to your mobile phone for free.
Cultivate Calm:
It is a well known fact that prolonged high-levels of stress have a negative impact on health and wellbeing. In 2012 the National Academy of Science published a study which shows that stress reduction improves health
There are many ways to cultivate calm, explore your personal favourites to incorporate into your lifestyle. Some suggestions include regular meditation, yoga practice, walks in nature or even listening to calming music. Incorporate therapies such as reflexology to release tension, improve circulation and clear your mind from clutter.
Having a wellbeing coach on board is invaluable during times that are particularly stressful. A little encouragement and support can do wonders for getting back on track for tackling the challenges of life and having better defence against infections.
Seven C's to Calm - Reclaiming your Anxiety-free Self is a simple, practical guide which includes tips and strategies that helped me to loosen the grip of anxious tendencies.
Loneliness is not good for your health and can even lead to chronic illness. Research published by the American Psychological Association suggests that social isolation may increase stress, which slows the body’s immune response and ability to heal quickly.
Make time for friends and family on
a regular basis and plan ahead for entertainment and activities that you enjoy
sharing with others. It helps to have something nice to look forward to after
all the work is done.
Keep your hygiene standards high:
To reduce your risk of infection from cold and flu viruses you need to reduce your exposure to germs. The following hygiene practices are recommended:
Shower daily and keep your hair clean, especially avoid handling your hair when out and about.
Wash your hands before eating or preparing food and before performing any other activity that brings contact with the eyes or mouth.
Wash all areas of your hands for 40 seconds and scrub under your fingernails.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing & discard tissues.
Carry an alcohol-based hand sanitizer for on-the-go use (as long as you have no allergies to the ingredients of course). Hand sanitising should take up to 20 seconds as per advice of W.H.O.
Disinfect shared surfaces, such as keyboards, table-tops, desks, phones, doorknobs, and remote controls.
Regularly clean personal items such as bags, scarves and devices such as mobile phones and limit sharing of items such as towels, drinking vessels and dining utensils.
Become a non-smoker:
Smoking increases the risk of infections by making structural changes in the respiratory tract and decreasing the immune response. According to a study of smokers and infections published in the Archives of Internal Medicine in 2004, smoking destroys cilia, the little hair-like fibres inside our noses, which lead to increase risks to infection by cold and flu. Hypnotherapy can help you to become a non-smoker.
Develop a positive attitude to life - it starts with a smile:
Changing my outlook on life has been the biggest contributor to my overall health, wellbeing and happiness over the last twenty years. A study appearing in the July 2003 issue of Psychosomatic Medicine, reports that people with a positive attitude (energetic, happy and relaxed) are less likely to catch colds than people who are depressed, nervous or angry. The study even reported that uptight or sad people are also more likely to complain of cold symptoms even when they don’t have a cold.
Developing a positive mindset needs constant effort. While it does get easier with time, it’s easy to become complacent, slipping back to old patterns. You have to be fully committed to your goal and that's why it's important to have support throughout that process. I share my experience and knowlegde with my clients individually and through my on-line courses and newsletters.
Our senses inform us of our environment and provide us with information which allows us to make choices that ensure our wellbeing and safety. We can avoid getting cold and flu viruses by becoming more observant and aware in our surroundings. This means being conscious of people around us and noticing if they have good hygiene e.g. are they covering their faces when they sneeze or cough? Being more aware means you can take more care around people who may be infected with viruses or you can choose to avoid or limit time spent in their company.
Another level of self-awareness involves awareness of energy arising from the intentions (good or bad) of those around you. It can be unpleasant and stressful to be in the company of someone whose intentions and actions towards us are poor and even of a bullying nature.
Negative energy can lead to stress and since stress has been shown to weaken our immunity it makes sense to choose to be around those who are of a more positive mindset with good intentions towards others.
Life is such that we cannot completely avoid people who cause us discomfort but we can certainly learn strategies for dealing with difficult people and uncomfortable situations.
Building your confidence from within coincides with identifying and following your purpose or authentic path. It is all part of building a positive attitude and being more empowered in life.

Art Honours Nature
Prior to my launch of 'The Sacred Lives of Tree's' I had never heard people openly discuss how they felt about trees.
Feelings expressed by many visitors to my exhibition were echoed by my on-line network of business community and friends.
Tree's provide comfort in times of lonliness and stress, they allow us to restore a connection within and to a greater source.
In keeping with this theme of nature and wellbeing, I've added some scenes influenced by time spent in Portugal in recent years.
The ocean is also a source of restoration and inspiration. Many people living in the Algarve referred to the healing energy of the water which is so refreshing after a long day working in the summer heat.
During an exhibition at Carlow's award-winning restaurant, Lennons at the Visual, I was interviewed by the crew of CWLTV, a Carlow TV video production company.
Owner and camera-man Pauric Brennan very generously invited me to show-off my artwork and talk about the inspiration for its creation and my plans for the future.
I was interviewed by Lisa McAree who assisted at the time. The shoot had a very Night Hawks* feel about it, as the camera was very strategically placed to demonstrate an interview style shoot. It all looked very professional.
*Night Hawks was a popular Irish late night TV show in the 1980's, featuring a mix of comedy, interviews and entertainment, all filmed in a night-club setting.

Thanks again to Pauric and his team at CWLTV
The video interview is no longer available to view. It was great to work with Pauric and his production team. Pauric continues to work in film in a creative and corporate capacity. He can help you with story creation for your business and can help you live-stream your events.
