Authors on Twitter - My favourites

Starting your own business for the first time is both exciting and daunting and especially so when you are daring to ditch your fearful, doubting alter-ego aka your 'imposter' self for once and for all. Networking and marketing are a necessary part of getting your business of the ground and essential to growth.

As an introvert & someone who previously stayed out of the lime-light for all the wrong reasons, I want you to know that opportunities await once you decide to be your authentic self.

When I embraced my authenticity and started to market my artwork and books I made new connections that served me well. These are just a few examples of people who have supported my work, they are all talented, courageous and kind.

"These are authors who are dedicated to their genre and who have interesting stories to tell, in fact some are thrilling and they share their stories with tremendous passion and enthusiasm."

Fire on the Mountain - Algarve Portugal 2018

During the summer of 2018, Portugal’s Algarve experienced two heat waves and a fire on the mountain of Monchique. It was one of the biggest fires in the area in fifteen years. It started on a Friday, 3rd of August.

I first realised there was something wrong when I came out the supermarket and saw the large plume of black smoke in the sky. I was staying in a caravan at the time. I wanted to experience life in the Algarve as I had a curiosity about relocating there.  When I asked my neighbours about the fire, they told me there was nothing to fear, it was a regular occurrence and even though the fire was only thirty minutes drive away, we were in no danger.

The heat was intense in the days before and during the fire, reaching up to 37 degrees in the coastal town of Portimao, whereas temperatures inland reached 45 degrees. Humidity was low and the earth was dry. Strong winds swept the fire further along the mountain.

On the second day the heat was so intense it felt as if the nearby bushes were on fire. Initially I went about my business the same as everyone else. Tourists in the coastal towns continued to enjoy their holidays. By the third day, ashes were falling from the sky and there was news of more evacuations in the Monchique region. I joined on-line groups that were keeping people informed of what was happening and I checked regularly with my neighbours for additional news; they always said the same thing:  ‘we are safe here.’

The fire continued and people in the locality donated money to buy food for the fire-fighters and the people displaced from their homes. More fire-fighters came to the area, with more resources to fight the fire. Eventually they had to go the ocean with their planes to get water to put out the fire.

I was disturbed from my sleep during the early hours of Tuesday morning (2a.m. August 7th). There was a lot of smoke in the air. I was scared. I went outside to look around. There was no sign of a fire nearby and everyone was still in their beds. I had no car, just a bicycle. I felt foolish about waking people up in the case of a false alarm. I spent the night trying to search the internet for new information on the fire. I didn’t sleep. I was exhausted the next day and emotional too. I can only imagine the effects the fire had on those who were much closer to it. By breakfast time I found out that the fire had moved closer in the night as the wind had changed direction. Still my neighbours said ‘don’t worry, we are safe.’

To a certain extent I knew they were right and the civic defence system was very efficient in assessing risk and organising timely evacuations. However, I felt my concern was still valid, we were in a rural area and it only took one mindless act to set off a new fire, as one example, I found a cigarette butt on the ground near my gate a few weeks later.

I had heard about a school in Portimao that had been set up as a volunteer centre. People were helping to prepare food to sustain the fire-fighters. I simply had to go there, it was a solidarity thing. I cycled to the school and inside the door I was directed to an office. When I opened the door everyone in the office was looking in my direction waiting for me to say something. In my best attempt at speaking Portuguese I said, ‘I am here to help.’

A lovely woman by the name of Paula Teixeira took me by the hand and brought me to the area where people were packing boxes with food. She handed me a coloured marker and told me that I could add some positive messages to the boxes. By now I was crying and couldn’t stop. A lady beside me said, ‘we have all had these same emotions.’

The majority of volunteers were from the local community of Portimao and a few were from other European countries like Germany, Spain and Italy. People worked in shifts, some volunteered at night after they had finished their day job. I met one young girl from Lisbon who happened to be on holidays in the area with her family.

Ana Costa was in charge of co-ordinating part of the operation. Her calm throughout was tremendous and the organisation of the group was impressive. It was important to establish the numbers to be catered for and to know if supplies were sufficient. If more supplies were needed the call was put out to the public and miraculously additional provisions arrived to the centre.

"We waited for news of the receding flames each time the trucks came to collect the food."

I helped by counting pieces of fruit, making sandwiches or putting lunch snacks into bags and I helped to pack the boxes and sign the outside with warm-hearted messages to keep the morale high. Hot meals were prepared by a kitchen team. In the last days of the fire there were 1,500 to be fed. We waited intently for news of the receding flames each time the trucks came to collect the food.

On Saturday August 11th, we received the news that the fire was extinguished. There was a lot of excitement that day. A box was selected to be reserved for the last meals to be sent to the mountain. It was decided that we would all sign our names to that box and write our messages of thanks for the unrelenting efforts that had been made to extinguish the fire, which had lasted for nine days.

Amazingly, no human lives were lost as a direct result of the fire, this was a huge achievement. Some people lost their homes or were temporarily displaced. According to the Algarve Daily News, 27,000 hectares were destroyed.

I am honoured to have served amongst the people of Portimao during the fire on the mountain in the summer of 2018.

We all cheered as the last box of food was packed and loaded on the truck. Afterwards a representative of the fire crew gathered us for a group photo and said some words of commendation and gratitude that had many people in tears. It was a huge relief and great accomplishment for everyone who was involved. I felt proud and humbled to be a part of the volunteer effort, it was the least I could do. I made friendships there which made the remainder of my stay more enjoyable and rewarding. Standing in solidarity with the people of Portimao and Serra de Monchique was by far the best experience of my time in the Algarve that summer.

The Monchique region is prone to fire. Usually these fires are contained very quickly and there is very little impact to tourists holidaying by the coast. There are always lessons to be learned from these events. In the days following the fire, I read about the suggestions being put forward by various groups and individuals. Many pointed to the flammable eucalyptus trees that are harvested for the paper-making industry and there were areas identified that needed improved access for fire-fighters.

I’m sure every group involved in fighting this fire on the mountain have had time to reflect on improvements that can be made. You don’t get time to think in those situations, you must act quickly, so having a framework for a plan of action is vital.

I am honoured to have served amongst the people of Portimao during the fire on the mountain in the summer of 2018. I am especially thankful to those who put their lives at risk to save the lives of others. Muito obrigada.

Being Authentic Gets You Places Including the Finals of Blog Awards

Ever wonder what your life would be like if you had the courage and know-how to move beyond your limiting beliefs, otherwise known as doubts & fears or even trauma and anxiety?

This story is just one example of what can happen when you dare to walk the road less travelled or what I now call the Authentic Path.

I was so excited when my article 'Autism - Reflexology Offers Calm' got selected as a finalist in Ireland Blog Awards of 2018, listed in the category Best Business Blog Post!

Finalist in Ireland Blog Awards

"Reaching the finals of these blog awards is a reminder of what has really been won, a lot of confidence and authenticity and freedom."

Here’s why reaching the finals was so significant:

I have every right to feel proud of myself, no be-grudger can take that from me. However, the point I really want to make is this:

"If I could rise from place of doubt & fear and very low confidence in myself then it is definitely a fact that many more people can do the same."

Getting by in life on a low-grade feeling is not what any of us really want.

We want to feel alive and usually we want to feel that our life matters, that we have purpose. I went in search of that purpose in 1999, I call it my 'Authentic Path' and it has brought me a lot of adventure, happiness and success.

What happens on the Authentic Path?

I’m still learning on this path but I’m also capable of using my teaching, caring and creative skills to help more people on their 'Authentic Paths'.

Each person who steps forward to make positive change in their life, has the capacity to positively affect their wider community. Working together to bring about this change is invaluable. Electric Scooter in Algarve Portugal

I first heard of 'E-Go Rider' electric scooter during my Algarve Network Tour in April 2018, a week spent reaching out to the local business community. I had fallen in love with this stunning part of Portugal on my first visit and there there the dream began. I wanted to find a way to live there and continue my work doing stuff I love.

Thanks to that network tour & the people who connected with me, I returned to the Algarve for 2 months during the summer of 2018 with a caravan for my accommodation and the possibility of the use of an electric scooter for my mode of transport.

I now wish I had organised some practice prior to my trip, as I was not used to this type of vehicle and I didn’t ‘take-off’ in a confident manner. I was kindly given instead, a state of the art bicycle by one of the 'Ego-Rider' team, for the duration of my 2 month stay.

Ego Rider is the brand name of a particular type of electric scooter, being imported from Asia by the owners of this operation in Portugal's Algarve. They test and prepare the electric scooter for the market and provide any necessary maintenance.

Their electric scooter is very ‘green’ in the environmental sense as it uses only electric power, costing very little to charge them (within 4 to 5 hours) and giving an average range of 40 to 60km. They come in many colours, red, black, white, orange, blue, yellow and green. There are also a few different models with different price ranges (up to €1, 375 at time of writing in summer of 2018).

The EGo-Riders are fitted with security alarm, mirrors and gears. Some have suspension in the front and back and others in front only. There is even a two seater model. They weigh on average 80kg and can be limited to speeds of 25km per hour or a maximum of 50km per hour.

The speed is significant, as the owners explained that in Portugal (at time of writing), electric scooters that were limited to 25km per hour, falling under the same category as bicycle. An electronic vehicle which travels any faster than 25km per hour is required to be registered in the same manner as a motorcycle and must adhere to the same safety regulations with regards to wearing of a helmet.

The Real Story is This

This article is very popular but currently not sponsored. Apart from giving you some details about electric scooters in the Algarve in 2018, it is really a story about successful networking. It's part of a wider story which I tell in order to show that no matter where we're at in our journey through life there is always a way to initiate change, to reach for happiness and success. I call that process the Authentic Path and I use my life stories and expertise to help people on that path. Work with me to achieve your goals & dreams. Meet Maria Lehtman - Author of The Dreaming Doors

Meet Maria Lehtman, a truly inspiring Finnish author, digital designer and so much more.

My regular readers will be familiar with my passion for inspiring ‘authenticity’ as a means to well-being and personal freedom.  Following the ‘Authentic Path’ is what led to my connection with Maria, who I have never met in person (Ireland is my home) but who I’ve come to know through digital communication and our subsequent collaboration on Maria’s latest book ‘Dreaming Doors’ (published in June 2018).

I am excited to introduce you to this fascinating author and artist who is the essence of kindness and who has a deep appreciation of nature.

Maria comes from very distinguished creative family line which includes a famous portrait photographer and writers. The creative arts were well nurtured in her family and throughout her youth and adult life Maria displayed a natural talent and love of drawing, music and singing. As always, the practicalities of life took hold and Maria had to find work to fund her studies. From there she became established in the telecommunications industry with responsibility for international people management and programs in digital communications.

While Maria’s work provided many opportunities for travel she managed to cultivate her love of photography and writing, and at one time had her own on-line business in digital photography.

The Dreaming Doors

"I have always believed that digitalization liberates artistic skills for anyone to express their creativity."

Maria Lehtman

I invited Maria to share her sources of inspiration and give tips for book creation and insights into the world of digital communications (social media).

Maria, what have been the greatest sources of inspiration in your life?

Travelling changed my life. My first "solo-travel" experience sparked up a flame that never died and made a difference in defining my identity. It helped me to value what I have, and who I am, as well as understanding other cultures. In addition, nature and art are great healers and I always wanted to share that beauty and empowerment with others.

Maria, considering your work in digital communications, can you tell us how you navigate these channels to identify the people who are your audience?

I work with social media constantly in my day job. Advocating the benefits of it in developing professional, digital footprint for employees and managers, I feel that I need to be at the forefront of understanding it. Written context can be difficult as you meet different individuals and you cannot always tell their motives based on how they appear on social media. I call it the looking glass effect. You need to see through the looking glass.

Having worked in a multinational business for several decades, I trust my gut, the same way I trust my gut when I interview and hire people.

People that I consider "my tribe" are typically very genuine, positive, helpful and open. I can sense when people are not as they want to appear. I look at the profiles, the way they interact with others in social media and read the signals from how they communicate and express themselves. Later on, when I think of an issue, a task or a next step, someone's name or profile pops into my mind.

Maria what inspired you to create your latest book ‘Dreaming Doors’:

This book is a tribute to the many old towns I had the privilege to visit. They are a mixture of historical sites and buildings, sites worn out by time and yet, making a mark in history just by being there. Someone, at some time in history, valued the doorways and spaces behind them.

I wanted to make these stories come alive while sharing my own. Every time I visited an old town, I took images of doorways and windows knowing that one day I would transform some of them into a book. The poems come with the imagery and the feelings I go through during the journeys. I use a Nikon to photograph and an iPad to write the poems. I created most of the content while flying above the clouds. I always feel a certain freedom during flights and use that time to write or meditate.

Maria, what advice do you give to people who are curious about creating a book of their own?

  • The most important step is to get started. Choose a topic close to your heart, keep it simple and tune out the inner critique.
  • Choose a method you are most comfortable with. Digital communication tools give you so many options e.g. create a blog series as a book, join communities to work with, or publish videos, podcasts etc. Instead of writing you can create imagery and quotes. A book can be many things.
  • Sketch out an idea, and every time you have an idea, save it on your mobile or other storage device/notebook. I use my mobile voice recorder when I don’t have time to write down thoughts.
  • Work with the book idea as a project, with main milestones and a deadline. If you don't have one, it won't happen
  • I usually have several topics in my mind, and I choose the one that I feel is the most important one for me personally to share. I start planning ideas years before I complete a project, so there are always 10 more in the pipeline for whenever I have the time.

So Maria, how does it feel to have accomplished the publication of your second book ‘Dreaming Doors’?

It’s a relief :). I feel like it's something that needed to be processed inside my soul. It’s been a healing process after many years of travel and hard work. I have had quite a few challenges in the past years with my health. Even though I was working long hours, I've always loved my work and the versatility that global communication provides and sharing my experiences.

And what’s on the horizon for Maria Lehtman, more books more travel?

While completing ‘Dreaming Doors’, many other book ideas came to mind. I would love to write a book about digital and intuitive leadership one day. Writing a researched book is very intensive work, so I mostly write blogs in that area at the moment. I'm currently looking into drone photography and micro-blogging ideas; perhaps these can bring another angle to my next book.

With regards to travel, I am recovering from an illness impacting my immune system that has kept me off airports for three years. For someone in a global industry it feels like a life-time. I have learned to take things one day at a time, and travel through social media channels instead. Perhaps I will visit Ireland. I have never been there, would love to visit!

Thank you for sharing these insights with us Maria!

The Dreaming Doors are available in hard-cover, e-book and kindle versions. They are an ideal, special gift for a loved one or even for yourself. Maria's photography and graphical display within the book are breath-taking. I am honoured to be the featured artist in Maria Lehtmans latest book which included two of my art images and poems (which were especially commissioned for the dreaming doors theme).

Be Authentic! My article in Womans Way Magazine

Huge thanks to Woman’s Way Magazine for granting me my first paid writer’s commission!

This is my published article which tells you why I am passionate about encouraging people to BE AUTHTENTIC!

"Have you ever told someone you love to ‘just be yourself’? Maybe you were trying to help an adult or a child to be at ease in a situation they were anxious about, like starting a new school or job.

When I was growing up, there were times when I wished someone could have handed an instruction book on ‘How to be Yourself’! Looking back, I realise it had a lot to do with understanding the world around me and getting to grips with how I could play my part, with an optimistic outlook.

But for many years I didn’t have this insight, I was plodding along, ignoring signs that all was not well. Eventually stress, anxiety and tension led to distress and emotional turmoil. I was forced to stop and examine how I had ended up in this situation. I call it my moment of ‘Break True’, it is also the title of one of my subsequent paintings.

The year was 1999. I left a teaching career in the countryside and headed to the city to find employment that would allow me the space and time to change my ways. I have never regretted this decision.

It was a time when access to online information was not as apparent and our society was still coy about addressing self-care and mental health awareness. The idea of someone ‘following their dreams’ would have seemed ‘whimsical’ to many. I quietly got on with my studies in the arts and at the same time developed a curiosity in the area of healing.

Here I was finally, discovering the instruction book I craved as a teenager. I call it my ‘Authentic Path’ and for my current work as a visual artist, writer and reflexology therapist, I use the tag-line ‘Inspiring your Authentic Path’ as my goal.

I want to share with you what being authentic means to me and why I believe it’s important for our wellbeing and happiness. I used to be full of anxiety, lacking in assertiveness, with unhelpful negative beliefs. I was no stranger to mental anguish and physical pain from time to time. I was spending my valuable energy hiding my true nature and gifts from everyone, including myself.

Finding my purpose had a huge part to play in my recovery from this ‘lack-lustre’ way of living. I sought out the best teachers, mentors, holistic therapists and business professionals to help me on my way. I discovered that putting my heart and soul into what truly ignites my spirit, led me to feeling stronger in myself. I was more motivated and willing to learn.

Over time, my physical pain was eliminated completely, I worked on developing a more positive attitude, suspending judgement and letting go of tension. I took courses to help me to become more assertive and to learn how to deal better with conflict. I moved my body through yoga and dance and I learned how to practice self-care and healing.

Overall I became more grounded, confident and capable, not because I faked it, but because I spent time acquiring knowledge in the topics that are essential to my work. When you learn from sources that can trace their origins more assuredly this too leads to a more authenticity in all you do.

In recent years the word ‘authentic’ has become a buzz word, as marketing and sales professionals realise that customers respond better to something that has a more ‘authentic’ feel about it. It’s nothing new, but when a thing is repeated over and over, we tend to pay less attention. That’s why I believe it is more important to inspire authenticity by our presence and actions.

Every person has something very special and unique to offer to the world. By being more present and exhibiting the best of ourselves we can have a very positive effect on others. Give yourself a moment to think about this in relation to your own life.

Today is the best day to make a start on your ‘Authentic Path’. We are all capable of learning and adjusting. Nobody can tell you who is the real you, that part is yours to discover more fully but you can seek inspiration and support on that journey.

I am aware that self-expression can be dangerous in some situations where people are bound by rules of their society or cultural beliefs. It takes courage to ‘Break True’. There are people far more courageous and inspiring than me but I do what I can in this moment in time and if one person can be inspired by my actions then that’s a fantastic result.

I help people to make their lives amazing by guiding them on their paths to authenticity, wellbeing and success. If you seek a more meaningful life take action by choosing from my range of books, and courses and coaching programmes.

Chance Encounters in Digital World

Marie Lehtman was one of the first people to purchase a copy of The Whisperings of Nature as soon as it was published. I had just annnounced the news of my first published book on Twitter. Maria spotted my tweet and connected with me right away.

I found out months later, Maria had been recovering (during that time) from a sudden and debilitating illness which had caused huge upheaval in her life. Eventually, she recovered sufficiently to start working on a book project of her own, a project which she kindly invited me to collaborate on with her.

The Dreaming Doors

The 'Dreaming Doors' is a collection of Maria’s poems (mostly in English), combined with her photography to create a thought-provoking reflection on the theme of doorways and dreams.

Doorways are also a fascination of mine. My 'Indian Heart Way' art collection features two interesting doorways which I encountered on my travels in India. I wrote two poems for Maria’s book and submitted images of two of my paintings for inclusion.

Authentic People

Like myself, Maria is also passionate about promoting Nature as a source of inspiration and well-being. It’s a clear sign that it pays to be authentic, as you're more likely to connect people, who share your passion, with the possibilities of working towards common goals.

Maria is the owner of my painting The In Between and it has been a pleasure to collaborate with her through the digital realm. Along with being a leader in digital marketing in the telecoms sector, Maria is also multi-talented in any art forms herself.

Find out more about Maria and the Dreaming Doors in our interview below. Her book The Dreaming Doors is a lovely keep-sake or a gift for those of you who love travel and the stories they inspire.
