Top 3 tips for resilience in pandemic - KCLR Podcast

Many business owners I know, agree that running your own business is challenging, rewarding and character-building. Running your own business in a pandemic that seems un-ending is quite a different matter.

Regardless of the type of business you own, your bottom line now heavily depends on your ability to function with a clear and focussed mind, two things that are greatly threatened by constant and rapidly changing circumstances due to COVID-19 preventative measures.

The pandemic has brought added pressures and stresses of protecting customers and employees, finding new ways to pivot business to on-line services, learning new systems and technology while trying to retain customer loyalty and brand identity with shop doors closed.

Without proper stress-management strategies in place many people are likely to experience burn-out due to pro-longed periods of poor sleep, fatigue, brain fog and feeling agitated and irritable. Weight-gain is another side-effect of un-managed stress and this does not always work favourbly for our self-image.

"Never before has it been so apparent that our health is our wealth. You simple cannot keep running on an empty tank. So, how do you avoid burn out in a pandemic that seems un-ending?"

I spoke to John Purcell on KCLR98FM business show The Bottom Line to give my six-minutes worth of my three top tips for building resilience to stay focused in order to successfully reach your business goals.

Your Authentic Style could be your Business Catalyst.

Develop Confidence & Skills for Networking & Marketing your Business with Authenticity.

I have a story to share about how I started as a solopreneur simply wanting to be my own boss, using my creative and healing talents to improve life for others. I knew nothing about marketing at that time but I could see very clearly that it was essential for my business.

Like or not, I would have to learn and I would need to get used to putting myself out there. This was the only way my business plans were going to work. I certainly could not afford to employ someone to do the marketing for me but I did avail of some on-line courses and I kept up to date by reading articles on the latest trends in social media.

The digital world was, and still is, changing rapidly, so learning has been a constant feature of my work, alongside creating artwork, writing books and providing reflexology treatments and all the additional nuts and bolts of growing and maintaining a business.

"Some people might say I am just lucky, that such opportunities come my way. I can say for sure, these opportunities are not accidental. I make my own luck. Luck comes while I am busy preparing for its arrival."

What helped me most was an attitude that I had been cultivating through 20 years of study in the creative and holistic field. With an attitude of positivity, curiosity and taking action I was able to take on the tasks of learning and applying the knowledge I was acquiring. My vocal studies instilled the importance of being authentic and allowing my passion for what I love to be more evident. Being authentic meant I had to be more definite in my actions and words. This too has made a huge difference, not only to the work I produce, but to the results I achieve in my use of marketing and business networking.

Over the last two years especially, I’ve become more strategic in my use of marketing. I write blog articles and create content for social media. I create schedules for posting my social media content.

Networking on and off-line is also important, so I attend regular network events and seek opportunities to speak on radio or TV, and to feature in magazines and local press. Sometimes these opportunities are presented to me without active seeking and I’ve been blessed too with offers from fellow bloggers to review my work. Opportunities that have come about as result of these continued efforts.

By using twitter to promote my first ever book of poetry (self-published), I made a connection with Nordic author and digital communications specialist Maria Lehtman. Maria purchased my book of poetry and sent me a lovely review.. Maria also loves nature and has many interests and talents which include, photography, writing, healing and digital marketing.

Nine months later, Maria invited me to be featured in her book entitled The Dreaming Doors. This was an exciting collaboration. Maria and I have never met in person, we completed our project entirely through digital channels. The Dreaming Doors was published in June 2018. In October of 2018, Maria contacted me again, this time to purchase one of my tree paintings entitled The In Between. I was very proud to be sending a piece of my artwork to Finland for the first time.

In February of 2019, Maria introduced me to the on-line network of Biz Catalyst 360. I have been invited to contribute some articles there and have already been featured thanks to Maria’s article entitled: What can you learn from a STEM specialist pursuing a creative path?

These opportunities are not accidental. I disagree with people who think others have more luck than them. I make my own luck. Luck comes while I am busy preparing for its arrival.

Developing Authenticity

Developing authenticity is not an accident either, it takes time and effort. The path towards authenticity is as unique as each person who seeks it. I simply wanted to express myself better as a singer and as a result of following that path, I realised I needed to change how I used my mind, my behaviours and my whole self.

I was a teacher at the start of this journey, my subjects were Maths and Science. Now I write books, I exhibit my artwork, I sing & I help people who want more authenticity & wellness to achieve happiness and success. My teaching ability is still in-tact; it has just taken a different focus.

Are You Ready to Rise with Authenticity?

While practicing as a holistic therapist many of my clients were professionals and business people. Some wanted to start their own business, others wanted to change career. Often these transitions can be stressful with a lot of uncertainty too. I found myself helping these clients by sharing my own experience of having travelled those paths, I knew what they were experiencing and could share strategies for maintaining, clarity and calm. Having an insight into the world of starting your own business has also been an advantage to my clients. This is how my Authentic Path coaching and wellness courses have come about.

Wexford Hour - Thanks for your support!

Good fortune is something we can attract by our own good deeds and earnest work. Some experiences however, impress upon us the importance of never taking our good fortune for granted. Thats why I feel gratitude is so important. Today I express gratitude for some of the very supportive networks that surround me off-line and on-line and one that deserves a big mention is WEXFORD HOUR!

#WEXFORDHOUR

For those of you who don’t use Twitter, Wexford Hour is an account on twitter which aims to promote businesses (many based in Wexford, Ireland) through weekly twitter chats.

The hash-tag #wexfordhour is used so that participants can follow the conversation, as we tell each other about our latest product or service or discuss how our business is going, having some fun and checking in on each other.

It’s especially good if you work by yourself, as I do quite a bit, it feels like you have some company along the way. We get a better sense of knowing each other through our weekly twitter chats. Sometimes a few of us even meet up in person,  that’s especially nice and strengthens the regard we have for each other.

Wexford Hour is currently hosted by Deirdre Ni Dhubhghaill of 2D Graphic Design @2DGraphicDesign.

@WexfordHour twitter chat takes place on Tuesday nights 9pm to 10pm (GMT) and they provide opportunity for you to promote your business.

Join in the craic (as we say in Ireland) and promote your business with the lovely folk in @WexfordHour on Twitter.

I always wanted to meet an Alchemist

I always wanted to meet an Alchemist, so imagine my curiosity when I encounter one who's journey has an uncanny resemblance to my own. It was a goose-bump moment during a busy network hour on Twitter, when Trevor Lorkings astutely noted our shared connection with Peru and our desire to help others through holistic work. In that moment, I gained a generous sponsor for my art exhibition (which I'd been promoting) and I made a new friend.

The Year of Awakening

For both of us, 1999 was our year of awakening to a higher purpose. Trevor's path lead him to study and teach Tai Chi. We both became Reiki Masters. I also qualified as a therapist of Reflexology.

The seeds of transformation had been planted much earlier as we discovered we both had read The Celestine Prophecies, a story set in Peru. Travel to Peru ignited my passion for writing while for Trevor it was the wilds of Scotland and the west coast of Ireland that compelled him to write poetry like never before.

These transformations lead to new paths. Trevor turned his love of digital design and computer programming into a business and I started a study of singing (vocal freedom) which has deepened all my creative practices. For both of us this was the start of new authentic living.

Interview with the Digital Alchemist:

How did you handle the transition to being self-employed?

Starting out in the digital business at the turn of the century, was a steep learning curve, assisting small to medium sized businesses by aligning their marketing strategies with the possibilities being made available through the emergence of the world wide web.

What excited you most about your business?

I'm passionate about helping others to flourish in a modern digital world. What's not to like about clients who respond with: OMG its sooooo fab thank you ! I absolutely love it! It's perfect!

Tell us about your family businesses:

I am a part of entrepreneurial family. One of our businesses, which started in our front living room in the middle of a recession, grew to turn-over a million pounds in its second year. This experience provided abundant opportunity to learn about the non-technical aspects of business.

Our family provides Printing Personalised Social Stationery, and everything for the artisan and avid home jam maker. My wife Rosemary is the Jam Maker, providing jam-making workshops and demonstrations. She also supplies jam jars and online supplies for home and artisan jam makers.

Trevor's advice for creative people starting in business:

Steer your thinking to why not, I'll give that a go, let's do it today! Don't get hung up on business, release yourself to get excited about life, the people, the places, the opportunities to widen you path, open your eyes and see that life is your business.

Trevor's thoughts on 'The Sacred Lives Of Trees':

Trees live for many seasons observing the cycles of life; a connection between heavenly clouds and solid foundations of earth; silent communicators of beauty.

Gratitude:

THANK YOU to Trevor Lorkings who has kindly designed and sponsored the promotional stationery for my art exhibition show-casing 'The Sacred Lives Of Trees'.

‘The Sacred Lives of Trees’ is a collection of paintings reminding us of the importance of earth connection for our well-being. Trees provide a form of spiritual nourishment for us humans. Throughout my exhibition and tour of ‘The Sacred Lives of Tree’s’, I provided a space for people to express this truth.

Add colour inspiration to your home or work space in the form of my vibrant tree paintings. Along with paintings I provide limited edition prints. Take a look in my online gallery. I'm on standby to help you with your selection.
